"Red Alert"

The Artwork's Story

.

No Scottish Wildlife Collection would be complete without the iconic red squirrel. Before my recent camping trip, I had never seen one in person, let alone had the chance to photograph them!

Over the course of my trip, I managed to capture them on four different occasions, but this particular reference comes from the very last day in Perthshire. There was a special moment when a very chonky red squirrel came along, happily munching on a stash of peanuts right near my camera. I even asked some of you to help name this cheeky little guy on my stories. But as I zoomed in, I realized something amazing—this "chonky chap" was actually a very pregnant lady!

She ate so many peanuts that she eventually fell asleep on top of her snack pile. I thought that was the end of our encounter, but about 30 minutes later, she surprised me by jumping onto a log just a meter in front of me. We both seemed equally startled! I quickly snapped this shot to reference for my painting, and the name “Red Alert” felt perfect—not only for the shock we both experienced but also as a nod to the squirrel’s striking red coat.

"Lady of Leith"

The Artwork's Story

.

The ever elusive Kingfisher...

This is one of my hardest Wildlife finds, a flash of blue up the river here and there tallied up my sightings. Having one stop and perch on the other hand, near impossible!

I didn't leave it down to luck, searching known locations and sitting out with a packed lunch camped out until one might pop by. My usual suspects were a pair and often in a hurry to get places which didn't bode well with the shot I had in mind to paint! The speed at which they pass you by is like they were small blue bullets, blink and you'll miss them.

Finally, I saw one perched as I followed it flying up the river. Not long enough to raise my camera and capture the shot - but enough that I could paint this moment backed up by a lovely local photographer's photo who HAS actually managed to capture this little jewel!

Female Kingfishers are identified by their red/orange lower beak as it's often characterised as their "lipstick". This led me to the title "Lady of Leith", a nod to the Water of Leith walkway, her home and mine.

"Woodland Jewel"

The Artwork's Story

.

After visiting a remote photography hide deep in the woodlands of Perthshire, I set my sights on my goal for the day: spotting a pine marten. I patiently waited, and after about 30 minutes, I heard scuttling on the tree bark and thought my moment had come!

But as I peeked out, I was greeted by an unexpected and beautiful surprise—a greater spotted woodpecker. It danced across the branches, pecking away at the bark with peanuts in its beak. Soon, a jay appeared, and the two seemed to be rivals, vying for territory.

I spent the afternoon photographing several woodpeckers, and one of them struck the perfect "classic" pose that I just knew I had to paint.

Sadly, after 10 hours in the hide, the pine marten never made an appearanc. But that’s the magic of wildlife watching—you never know what you’ll encounter. Instead of my planned pine marten sighting, I had the joy of observing this impressive bird all afternoon. A day well spent, indeed
